Airtel Africa Came Back and Made Further Commitment to Assist Mathare Kids.

Airtel- Africa Chief Marketing Officer, Andre Beyers and Airtel Kenya Managing Director, Adil El Youssefi led the team of Airtel Marketing and Kenya employees during their second visit to Mogra Star Academy- first visit was March 2014.
Impressed with the resilience of Mathare children at Mogra and the school organization on their first visit March 2014, they stated their interest on finding way to try to help the Mogra Star Academy.
6 months later, with the full support from Airtel Africa’s Chief Marketing Office Christian De Faria, Airtel Africa and Airtel Kenya have made commitment for weekday daily breakfast and lunch and weekend lunch for over 1000 Mogra Star Academy students and payment of salaries for 44 teachers for the next 2 years!
While most students are keen to study, there is a common understanding that meal is a motivating factor for children’s attendance. When most of the students from Mathare would rather scramble for food than go to school, this substantial commitment of Airtel comes as a huge relief for parents, teachers and the community as a whole to keep the children in school.
Salaries of teachers would certainly keep the school operating. Teachers as the most integral members of the education commensurable and timely salaries is a must. We hope to retain our teachers and attract qualified teachers as an outcome.
These are the two urgent concerns Mogra Star Academy has been continuously toiling on particularly when the operation of the school heavily relies on donations. Certainly, a huge relief has come to Mogra.
Over 900 students present on the day of Airtel visit were delighted with Airtel T-Shirts and caps ardently distributed by Airtel employees- we certainly painted the ground in red. Muffins and sodas were given to the kids and visits by the executives in some of the classrooms were held.
A highlight of the visit was the opportunity given to the secondary students to ask questions to the senior executives about their roles in the company. Airtel Kenya's Managing Director Adil El Youssefi stressed that hard work and luck have major parts helping him reached his status now. Opportunities to speak with professionals are very much welcome and appreciated to give insightes, inspiration and motivation to look forward beyond the corners of the classrooms.
Bharti Airtel Africa has been actively pursuing activities that will improve the lives of the community by inspiring youth. Their Corporate Social Responsibility pillar: education, employee volunteerism, health and environment are key factors Africa needs to sustain. With active participation of organization and corporation through CSR is indeed one way to realize these.
Asante sana Airtel and more power!
